This consists of two things: how we act and how we live. Friendship is a vital to being able to come unto Christ; friendship is literally the way we treat other people. Marvin J. Ashton said that “The best and most clear indicator that we are progressing spiritually and coming unto Christ is the way we treat other people.” (Elder Marvin J. Ashton, Ensign, May 1992, 20). True friendship is more than a mere acquaintance; true friendship is treating others as Christ would treat you. One of my favorite poems explains this well:
“That’s A Friend” by John Burroughs
One whose grip is a little tighter,
One whose smile is a little brighter,
One whose deeds are a little whiter,
That’s what I call a friend.One who’ll lend as quick as he’ll borrow,
One who’s the same today as tomorrow,
One who’ll share your joy and sorrow,
That’s what I call a friend.One, when you’re gone, who’ll miss you sadly,
One who’ll welcome you back again gladly,
One who, though angered, will not speak madly,
That’s what I call a friend. One who is always willing to aid you,
One whose advice has always paid you,
One who’s defended when others flayed you,
That’s what I call a friend. One who’s been fine when life seemed rotten,
One whose ideals you have not forgotten,
One who has given you more than he’s gotten,
That’s what I call a friend.
How we live also is a factor of spiritually coming unto Christ. One sure way of knowing if you are progressing spiritually in your home is to ask yourself how you would react if Christ came to visit. Since we are told in Alma 34:32 that “this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God” and given the fact that most people spend more than 50% of their time at home, it would only make sense that we should strive to keep our homes in such a way that it produces an atmosphere in which we would be comfortable if the Savior came to our home to visit us.
Some questions we might ask ourselves:
Would we want to change the channel on the television or turn it off?
Would we want to turn off the music we are listening to?
Would we want to hide some magazines, books or other items?
Would we want to put the scriptures and church publications out as if we read them frequently?
Would what we say or do be different?
Thus, how we act and how we live show how we are spiritually coming unto Christ.
