Joseph Smith Papers and Journals

Last week I was browsing through the LDS bookstores, shopping for Christmas presents. I ended up going over to the Beehive Clothing/Distribution Center a few blocks away to get the exact same items for 25%-40% less than the LDS Retailer’s supposed 30% sale price. It baffles me that LDS Retailers would take advantage of their own people for financial profit, yet it happens.

Anyways, in one of the stores, I had noticed the advertising for the new volume series of Joseph Smith Papers. I was quite intrigued by the work that was involved in the compilation.

This unprecedented compilation, to be published by The Church Historian’s Press, will eventually comprise 30 volumes, including journals, correspondence, discourses and written histories, as well as legal and business documents.

Elder Marlin K. Jensen, Church historian and recorder, has called the Joseph Smith Papers Project “the most significant Church history project of this generation.” When finished, it will be the most complete and authoritative collection of documents related to Joseph Smith Jr., founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The volumes’ standard size will be 7 x 10 inches, hardbound, with a selling price of $49.95. Limited leather bound editions will also be available. On November 21st, The Church Historian’s Press will publish Journals, vol. 1: 1832–1839, the first volume of The Joseph Smith Papers. Two or three volumes will be published each year until the project’s completion.

With 30 volumes, it will be quite a collection to have, although acquiring it over 10-15 year period would be quite cumbersome. Well, there goes my budget for LDS books for the next 15 years! However, I’m really looking forward to their publication.
