Give Up Everything to Receive Christ

We coming into mortality with no physical possessions and we will leave with none. This is a concept that I have known my whole life. However, there are many non-physical things that we acquire throughout mortality that are needed to be sacrifed in order to be saved.

With financial markets throughout the world in shambles and with governments on the verge of collapse, it is clear to see that those who had much wealth were compelled to be humble as their losses continue to accumulate. However, what of those who do not have wealth to sacrifice to know Christ?

During the past couple weeks, a recurring scripture came to mind. When Aaron is teaching King Lamoni’s father, the king becomes converted and is willing to sacrifice all, both physically and non-physically.

“Behold, said he, I will give up all that I possess, yea, I will forsake my kingdom, that I may receive this great joy.” (Alma 22:15)

I will give away all my sins to know thee, and that I may be raised from the dead, and be saved at the last day.” (Alma 22:17)

As Latter-day Saints, I find that there are many who still do not understand the need of BOTH sacrifices. Over the years I have met many church members who have been unwilling to give up the majority of their wealth. In church meetings over the years (testimony meeting, gospel doctrine class, et cetera), I have heard many people say that they have “small sins” that they feel are too insignificant to give up. Such things as watching football games on the Sabbath, or the addiction of carbonated cola drinks, or perhaps listening to music that drives away the Spirit. The question is, are you willing to give away all your sins to receive Christ?
